Abstract

In the Tirukkural, within the Porutpāl section under Natpiyal, there is a separate chapter titled “Marunthu” (Medicine, Chapter 95). This chapter mainly speaks about dietary discipline and ways to prevent disease. Valluvar’s view of food is based on digestion, nature, and health. One should eat only after hunger arises and after the previous meal has been digested; the stomach should be filled with three quarters food and one-quarter water; foods that are natural, wholesome, and suitable for the body should be consumed. Eating at the proper time preserves the body free from illness for a long period. In short, through his couplets, Valluvar emphasizes that food itself is the foundation of a healthy way of life.
